Nepean Case Study Project

The CMA will undertake a case study in 2006/07 to explore how its programs interact with those of other natural resource managers and how this impacts the CMA's investment.

The concept grew out of the CMA's Catchment Action Plan and draft River Health Strategy, where it became apparent that a more detailed consideration of the influences on catchment health that are outside the responsibility of the Hawkesbury Nepean CMA could assist the organisation to achieve its management objectives and investment priorities.

These influences include a wide range of functions, including water management, pollution control and urban planning. This diversity of responsibility has the potential to reduce the effectiveness of the Hawkesbury Nepean CMA's investment.

The case study will focus on the Nepean River, upstream of Wallacia to the headwaters and it will:

  • confirm the roles and responsibilities of all other natural resource managers in the subcatchment

  • identify where the HNCMA can benefit from integrating its investment with other government programs

  • develop a Nepean Subcatchment Plan that prioritises and timetables the required Hawkesbury Nepean CMA actions to achieve the CAP targets in the subcatchment and documents how the actions of others relate to the CAP, and

  • identify monitoring requirements to assess performance against the CAP and Nepean Subcatchment Plan.

The Hawkesbury Nepean CMA will use the results of the case study to help establish and refine priorities, targets and actions for its on ground works in the Nepean subcatchment.
