The Hawkesbury-Nepean Catchment Management Authority (HNCMA) is currently offering community groups and local councils grants up to $20,000 to help improve coastal and estuary areas of the catchment, extending from Yarramundi in the Hawkesbury to the beaches of Pittwater.

Funding applications are open until 29 January 2010.

The funding targets habitats such as beaches, dune systems, estuaries, intertidal zones,  inlets and coastal wetlands, islands and reefs and their associated coastal vegetation, including mangroves, coastal woodlands and heathlands.

Funding is available directly for onground practical environmental works or for education and awareness-raising activities which support onground improvements.

The HNCMA is looking for projects which tackle a range of issues including:

  • biodiversity/habitat decline and loss
  • adverse impacts of invasive plants
  • obstacles to coastal community participation
  • lack of community awareness
  • understanding and knowledge of coastal environments.

Community members interested in discussing funding opportunities should contact the HNCMA on (02) 4587 0050 or download an Expression of Interest  form and funding guidelines here.
