Catchment Protection Scheme

Severe erosion near Marulan Severe erosion near Marulan
This scheme aims to repair land degradation throughout the Warragamba catchment to protect water supplies for Sydney and the Blue Mountains. It also operates in the Capertee and Wolgan Valleys, north of Lithgow.
Funding is available to:
  • Fence vulnerable areas including gullies
  • Stabilise creek crossings
  • Install river bank and bed erosion controls works
  • Construct flumes (a concrete or rock chute that protects an eroded gully)
  • Install sediment trapping weirs
  • Construct contour or graded banks
  • Reshape eroded gullies
  • Plant native vegetation in treated areas

Landholders can receive funding up to 90% of the cost for treating severely eroded lands. For moderate soil erosion control, the level of subsidy is determined site by site, following assessment of the project.

Ten-year agreements are negotiated with landholders which detail the design, specifications and overall plan of remediation works, and ongoing maintenance and management of the site.

The program is a partnership between the Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority, the Sydney Catchment Authority and landholders. Funding is provided by the NSW Government and through the Natural Heritage Trust.
